Microphones We Used: Avatone (Pro) CK6 and Audio Technica AT2020

We used the Avantone CK-6 Large Capsule Cardioid FET Condenser Microphone for one vocal. The CK6 has a shock-mount included with it which allows a precise positioning of the microphone while restraining the transferring of unwanted vibrations up into the microphone. The isolation allows for superior results.  The CK6 has a 80Hz high-pass filter switch which can be engaged which reduces the rumble and keeps unwanted low frequencies from “muddying up” the track.

We used the Avantone CK6 for vocals whilst recording. This is a large condenser microphone with a cardioid pattern. We used this for the vocals because of the clean sound that we get when we are recording with it. It’s frequency response shows that it boosts high frequencies which is good for vocals as vocals use high frequencies more than low ones.

The CK6’s frequency response shows that it cuts the low frequencies which is good as under 80Hz those are the frequencies that aren’t vocals therefore those frequencies are just unwanted.

For the second vocal microphone we used the Audio Technica AT2020. This microphone offers a wide dynamic range. It’s low-mass diaphragm provides extended frequency response and superior transient response. It’s cardioid polar pattern reduces pickup of sound from the sides and rear therefore improving isolation of the vocals. Also, having the stand mount attaches securely for easy and precise placement of the microphone.

This microphone delivers a very mature, believable sound 0n vocals. Using it as a microphone, it displays the kind of lower mid-range warmth that flatters most singers and combines this with a very subtle presence peak that add ‘air’ without being on the side of harshness.
